A popular new sport in Switzerland, Nordic Walking is a fitness walking technique with specially designed poles. While enthusiasts practice this sport anywhere and anytime of the year, some destinations in the region offer dedicated trails, either in the countryside or in the Alps.
Nordic Walking was invented in Finland by cross-country skiers who wanted to train whatever the weather and all year round. It consists of fast walking with poles, which provide support for the lower body and work for the chest.
In Switzerland and the Lake Geneva Region, there are lots of ideal places to enjoy this sport, all year round, as an individual or a group. A number of associations organise tasters and regular excursions for all abilities and even for people suffering from joint pain. Some destinations have specially-devised trails, particularly in the Vaudois Alps, on the hills around Lausanne or in the Three Lakes Region.
